How Do I Commission a Biography?

Begin by e-mailing a request for more information or a free telephone consultation (206-782-0982 or swmccredie@gmail.com). I’ll be happy to answer any questions. You can choose from several different types of biography, from simple to complex, priced accordingly.

Manuscripts can either be in first-person or third-person, meaning that I can make the book sound as though it was written by the subject, for greater authenticity and intimacy. Writing a manuscript using a first-person perspective is called ghostwriting. In fact, with a ghostwritten book the subject’s name can appear as the author.

The project can either be done face-to-face (if you or the subject live in the Seattle area) or remotely (via telephone and email) anywhere in the world.

What Choices Do I Have?

Because people have budgets of varying sizes, we offer a range of choices. Here are the format options, from simplest (and least expensive) to most complex:

Interview Only $500-$1500

A 3-to 10-hour interview with the subject (longer times may require several different sessions). Additional interviews (of family members or friends) can be arranged. Transcriptions available. Video Biography also available.

Basic Biography $1500

The Basic Biography includes:

  • A three-hour taped interview with the subject (which you get to keep).
  • One-hour taped interviews with each of three close friends or relatives of the subject.
  • Transcription of tapes and selection of quotes.
  • Shaping of the material into a coherent, flowing narrative.
  • Creation of manuscript. The size will range from 5,000 to 8,000 words (20 to 30 double-spaced, typewritten pages), about the size of a long article in a magazine such as Smithsonian or Harper’s.
  • You and/or the subject reviews draft to insure accuracy and discretion.
  • Laser-printed finished manuscript

Standard Biography $5000 +

The Standard Biography is longer and more complex.

  • A six to ten-hour taped interview with the subject (which you get to keep).
  • One-hour taped interviews with up to six friends or relatives of the subject.
  • Transcription of tapes and selection of quotes.
  • Shaping of the material into a coherent, flowing narrative.
  • Creation of a draft of the biography. The size will range from 25,000 to 30,000 words (about 100 pages in a standard-size book).
  • You and/or the subject review drafts to insure accuracy and discretion.
  • Laser-printed finished manuscript

Deluxe Printed Biography $7000-$10,000

The manuscript, with accompanying photographs and ephemera, scanned and incorporated in a beautiful, entirely unique commercially printed edition.  Options range from traditional hand binding (hardback)  to print-on-demand (trade paperback) to e-book.

________________

A memorable gift for any special occasion, a biography is most of all a meaningful heirloom that will be treasured by your family for generations to come.

Think about the idea. Talk it over with your family. If you believe this might be a good way to permanently record the details of your parent’s (or other relative’s) lives, please contact me by phone, mail or e-mail.

Let me close by saying that even if you don’t commission me to write your relative’s biography, I urge you to find a way to get it on paper now, while it’s on your mind and those great family stories are still in theirs. Perhaps suggest that your parents take a memoir-writing class, or at least get them to talk about their lives on tape. Otherwise, time passes all too quickly.
